From ancient times Pharmacy is known as a branch associated with healthcare service. The word Pharmacy has been derived from the Greek word “Pharmakon”, meaning drug. Professoinals deals in drugs or medicines were supposed to be trating the patients with extemporaneous preparations (to be made and dispense). Today, a professional after completion of Diploma in Pharmacy acts as inevitable element of our total Health care system. Unlike the other curriculum Pharmacy is a product, as well as, service related discipline, increasing its scope two- fold.
Since a huge transformation has occurred within the health care system not only in the developed countries but also in the developing countries towards the promotion of safer use of medicines, opportunities for all the diploma holders are even wider now. A Pharmacist is always the preferred person for patient counseling regarding their medication. The area of responsibilities of a Pharmacy professional includes dispensing drugs at Govt. hospital outpatient deptt, deal in Pharmacovigilence, as executive at DIC (drug information centre), safety of drugs, formulation of dosage forms in pharmaceutical industries, quality testing & control, packaging, storage, marketing, regulatory affairs etc. The profession of pharmacy has transformed into a hub for the “Global Healthcare” and evolved as a multidisciplinary, multifaceted curriculum.
